5 Ways To Create A Home You'll Love

Decorating our place has got to be one of the most exciting parts of the home renovation process. The most time-consuming and semi-permanent decisions we've made have been executed and completed. Such as the flooring, choosing paint, kitchen cabinets, hardware, doors, tile, countertop stone & lighting.  Now comes the fun part, decorating and furnishing our home.  I have made a lot of mistakes in the past  (not to mention wasted a lot of money) because I had no vision or direction when decorating our previous home. Now that we are first-time homeowners we are a lot more prideful and selective, which in turn is saving us not only a lot of money and our home is turning out to be what we envisioned and dreamed.

1. Vision boards
The first and most important step for me was having a clear picture of the aesthetic and feel I wanted our home to have. You can start the process of creating a vision board with thinking of the words that you and your better half want in a home. We came up with: modern, clean, airy, white, open, but eclectic and colorful at the same time.

Next, PINTEREST! I pinned like there was no tomorrow. Search each describing word followed by the room you plan on decorating. i.e. Modern bedroom, clean and airy bathroom....and so on. This will open up your eyes and inspire you to take chances and make your space truly yours. Grab a little bit of inspiration anywhere you can find it, but remember, make it your own. The last thing you want to do is replicate someone else's ideas in your home.

2. One room at a time
Decorating can be a lot of fun, but it can also be stressful if you're trying to decorate the entire house all at once. Keep your focus on one room. This will allow you to be fully dedicated to finding pieces that truly speak to you.

3. Only buy what you love
My #1 shopping rule (with everything) is to make sure that I am completely in love with anything that I buy.  Furniture, in particular, is not cheap. The last thing you want to do is purchase a couch that you're not 100% sure about, and regret the fact that you spend a few thousand dollars on it later. No regrets!  I promise you that there is no wrong that you can do if you only buy what you love. If you're unsure about it, skip it!

4. Don't buy everything from one place
It's easy to walk into a store and pick out every single thing that catches your eyes. I've made the mistake in the past where I was so eager to finish decorating our house that we would walk into one store and buy EVERYTHING for the entire house. We were left with a home that had no personality.
Take your time and enjoy the process. It's a lot of fun for me to scour the internet for the unique little stores that have handmade or personalized things. I also enjoy going to flea markets & vintage stores because I am bound to find "One of a Kind" items that no one else will have in their home.

5. Measure
Make sure that you look at the dimensions of every object before you buy. Furniture takes ages to get delivered as is (up to 10-12 weeks sometimes), and the last thing you want is to have a piece delivered that does not fit the way you envisioned it. Measure everything!

My husband and I wanted to take the challenge of designing and decorating our first home because we enjoy bringing our visions to life. To us, it's not about having a home that looks like it came straight out of a design magazine with every trend at play.  It's more about creating a little piece of heaven that's warm and cozy where we can continue to raise our little boy.

I hope you find these tips helpful. Is there anything in particular that you do to create the home you love? I would love to know!
